Bernardus Billy started as a Senior Associate at Makes and Partners Law Firm in 2012 and was appointed Partner in 2017, making him the youngest partner at the Firm.
Billy has been involved in many of the deals that have established the Firm as the dominant player in the market. He is recognized for his expertise in handling matters in connection with both domestic and international capital market transactions, mergers and acquisitions, foreign investments, and project financing for domestic and international clients. He is at the forefront of the Firm’s Startup, Venture Capital, and Fintech Practice and has advised various venture capital firms, private equity firms, investors, and start-up founders during their different stages of financing, including Temasek, KKR, Expedia, Djarum Group, and Korea Investment Partners. Billy’s extensive knowledge regarding the boom in the start-up and fintech space led him to form Aksara Nusantara in 2019. It is essentially a kit of editable Standard Startup Agreements that acts as a helping tool for start-ups during the initial stages of their fundraising process.
Billy also led the team in several significant international capital market transactions (144a and Reg S transaction) such as global notes offering, medium term notes offering, international private placements, and initial public offerings (IPOs). He has represented PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk., PT Ciputra Development Tbk., PT Agung Podomoro Tbk., PT Soechi Lines Tbk., and Golden Energy and Resources, to name a few.
Due to Billy’s exposure to several sectors, he possesses a strong legal and commercial grip on every step of the transaction and the underlying commercial sensitivities, which help him render effective advice. Billy is lauded by his clients for his deep understanding of the law and approaching his legal practice from a commercial as well as a practical perspective, thereby providing them with “bespoke” solutions to complex legal issues.
Billy has been recognized as the Leading Lawyer Rising Star by International Financial Law Review (IFLR) 1000 in 2019 as well as 2020 for his practice in capital markets and M&A.
Billy graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Parahyangan in 2010.
